For water and energy companies, maintaining separate teams for physical meter readings is becoming increasingly challenging and costly. Waternet found itself in a similar situation and sought a comprehensive solution that encompassed both digital and physical meter readings.


With over 30 years of expertise in the utilities sector, PTI has been the specialist in meter readings. With Metering as a Service, we take it a step further. For Waternet, we have expanded the well-known meter reading app (remote meter reading) to include door-to-door meter readings.

The challenge

Almost all water meters at water companies are still analog, whereas around 85% of meters at energy companies are already smart and read automatically from a distance. This puts pressure on the traditional system of separate teams for physical meter readings at utility companies. The challenge is exacerbated by dispersed addresses, complicating the process and significantly increasing costs. Maintaining an in-house team is becoming less attractive. Waternet also faces this challenge, seeking a comprehensive solution for both digital and physical meter readings in one, leading them to PTI’s Metering as a Service.



The approach

With our convenient meter reading app, we have effortlessly collected a large percentage of meter readings for years through various channels. Automated customer communication ensures consumers are informed. They are prompted via mail, email, or SMS to provide their meter readings.


With Metering as a Service, we go a step further. If remote meter readings are not feasible, we automatically send a meter reader to the door. Even then, consumers receive timely information and can confirm or modify appointments. This way, Waternet has fully organized and automated the process, from digital to physical meter readings.
